Use baskets. If you want a neater living room make friends with baskets. But before you shop for baskets figure out what you really want to keep in the living room (see No. 6) so you can choose the right ones for the job. Toys are best in open baskets because they make it easier for little ones to find what they are looking for; personal documents and messy‐looking items are better stowed in lidded baskets. And remember to measure your shelves before shopping; you don't want to come home with a carload of new organizing supplies only to find they don't fit.

Create a feature wall. Embrace the dark side with a single feature wall. The black wall in this room helps to put the bed and lights at center stage while the remaining white walls and crisp white bedding keep the look airy.

Clean lines. Floating shelves are one thing but floating cabinets add an unexpected element to a minimalist living area like this one. Hide any clutter in the cabinets and show off only the most beautiful objects.

Celebrate luxury. "My inspiration for this bathroom was modern elegance" says Jamie Herzlinger of Jamie Herzlinger Interior Design. "Modern can sometimes get very cold but freestanding tubs celebrate luxury and sensuality. So I personally always feel that if you have the time to enjoy a bath whether alone or with someone else it’s an occasion that needs to be celebrated. Nothing beats taking a bath in a freestanding tub for a sensual experience". Try this in a smaller bathroom. "Freestanding tubs or claw‐foots for that matter have an essence about them" says Sophia Cok of Design Associates. "They have the ability to turn bathing into a luxurious experience".

Mismatched chairs same material or shape. If you love hunting for vintage chairs a great way to build a set is by keeping an eye out for chairs made of the same material or in a distinctive shape – cane‐backed ladder‐back wood metal wicker and so on. Once you have your set you can determine whether or not you also want to unify them with paint (see No. 2).

Tile mosaic and hammered pendant light. Craft a worldly look with a mosaic of mismatched tiles like the Cuban tile shown here printed cushions and a hammered silver or copper pendant light. Benches are extra cozy but a tiled accent wall alone could add oomph to any breakfast nook.

Glass mosaic tile "was used throughout the open air shower and the tub area" Mackie notes. "The MTI whirlpool tub has jetted features and remote controls while the shower has a Grohe fixture with an adjustable arm. There's also a heated towel bar". Go with stone. "I rarely use anything but freestanding tubs. I love them!" says Cheryl Kees Clendenon of In Detail Interiors. "This one is from Turkey and is solid marble. The owners are from Louisiana and like darker colors and rich texture. We wanted to showcase the space and placing the tub in front of these windows was perfect – it really became the centerpiece".

Ensure proper drainage. Not only will you guard against damage from standing water but you'll also protect yourself from skidding on wet floors. Angle the shower floor slightly so that water flows toward the drain and think about adding a second drain for doubly effective siphoning. Select surfaces that can stand up to moisture. Even with careful attention to an open shower's design splashes and steam will escape. Outfit your bath with surfaces that hold their own against moisture: porcelain or glass tile metal stone solid surfacing engineered quartz and some woods. Avoid fabrics and other materials that are prone to mildew.

You can't go wrong with a classic country table. Generally the country‐style dining table is large and therefore suitable for families or for people who regularly entertain. These tables are usually made from a solid timber like oak or pine making them very robust. They also have an uncomplicated design suitable for most schemes although pleasingly many country tables feature elegantly turned legs that support the tabletop. The only real consideration in buying this style of table is whether to go for an upmarket one such as a French colonial table or one with the rustic appeal of an English country farmhouse. Whatever you choose to suit your home you can be assured that both will look drop‐dead gorgeous when they are set and dressed for a country farmhouse feast.
