The diva isn't interested in the ordinary. She wants a bedroom that makes a statement as loud and clear as she does herself. Her eye is honed for unusual finds like a fabulous antique headboard and a classic Louis chair stamped with a face and splashed in lime green. An eclectic space gets her creative juices flowing. Creating an impact is second nature to the diva. A room almost entirely in hot pink? The diva does not hesitate to approve a bold color scheme. In fact why would she stop at the walls? The diva never goes halfway – she ensures that the ceiling is in on the act too. A diva knows that a room in all black exudes edgy drama so you'd better believe she is all for it. The diva knows the talents and ways of the past can teach her multitudes so she is no stranger to antiques. She mixes them in accordingly proud of her one‐of‐a‐kind finds. The diva travels all over the world so she is not about to have a bedroom without an incredible view. If she's a superdiva she likely has several of these bedrooms with a view in all sorts of spectacular places.

Here the classic silver vase looks great but I favor a simple glass vase as it catches light beautifully and goes with anything. Flea markets and yard sales are great hunting grounds for bargain antiques. Personal treasures. Your bedroom should be personal to you so be sure to display some of your treasured keepsakes. The glass dome on the bedside here could be used for a favorite ornament or maybe flowers from the first bouquet your sweetheart ever bought you. Bedside classics. Bedside books are accessories in their own right. I'm not suggesting you only read attractive books but stack a few old classics carefully chosen from a vintage bookstore and you have a gorgeous arrangement. A structured wall light. Wall lights save space on your bedside table for that pile of classic novels. Remember to keep everything in scale though – these would look lost on a big blank wall above your bed. Above‐the‐bed artwork. Without a huge ornate headboard or an architectural feature chances are you will need something above your bed. Pictures are wonderful but be sure they are themed. I like perfectly spaced symmetrical arrangements (rows of three work really well) which fit with traditional styling perfectly. Random shapes sizes and frame types also can look good especially if you are going for a more rustic feel but they're harder to get right. Just be sure to keep with a theme and keep the spacing equal. Something playful. I love to add a touch of humor to my styling and accessories are the perfect vehicle. This fish cushion makes me smile. You could also use a framed picture that introduces an element of fun to your room.

"This paper was installed as a feature wall and grounded the rest of the room's lighter tones by adding a little drama " she says. "I designed a custom velvet platform bed that was kept low to the ground in order to allow the wall to take center stage. The chandelier over the bed added to the mood and the crystal knob details on all the furniture rounded out that glitzy glamour feel." Accent the positive. This bedroom is part of an open loft so Valerie Pasquiou was looking to give it a bit of a cozy feel and some softness by bringing an "un‐overwhelming accent wall into the room with a hint of femininity " she says. "The overall idea was also to keep a light and crisp fresh feel to the room." Focus on texture. "When you have a really monochromatic bed and everything feels very calm and toned down you want something to be a focal point” says Tineke Triggs of Artistic Designs for Living. "This wallpaper brought texture and depth to the room.” Impress your guests. Interior designer Tara Seawright uses wallpaper in a lot of her projects.

One smart solution to saving a new mom's sanity is incorporating a daybed or sofa into the nursery decor. This extra seating can serve as a comfortable spot to sit with your little one or to crash on those extra‐difficult nights. Creating a daybed in the nursery is as simple as pushing a box spring and mattress to the wall and adding a few comfortable pillows. The daybed shown here has the appearance of a lush sofa with the size and comfort of a full‐size bed. Thanks to stores such as Ikea and sites like Craigslist finding an inexpensive sofa can be a simple task. If the fabric isn't exactly what you had in mind don't rule out the piece. Try draping a blanket or quilt over the cushions to freshen up the look. If adding an extra bed or couch to the nursery has you concerned about space planning consider placing the crib at an angle. This will keep the furniture in the room from hugging the walls and will help open up the space. If you incorporate the extra bed into the nursery decor you will have less redecorating to do when the time for a big‐kid bed rolls around. Many young families enjoy spending time in the baby's nursery. The rooms are often peaceful calming spaces so adding a few toys for older siblings like the stuffed animals and rocking horse shown here will help them feel right at home too. Having a cozy spot for nursing or to rest with baby is a nice way to pamper yourself during those first few tiring months that baby's home. When you're no longer spending as much time in the room you can easily remove the extra furniture and place it in other areas of the home.

Since the Victorian era what we need in the bedroom has changed very little. We need essentially the same pieces – bed bedside tables clothes storage. And we like essentially the same aesthetic – comfortable peaceful even luxurious. Indeed we may still find the fabrics and wallpapers of that period attractive. Victorian staples such as freestanding wardrobes marble‐topped washstands and folding screens can be reinvented for modern bedrooms while still retaining the Victorian feel. Keep reading to learn how to turn a Victorian bedroom into a personal space you'll love spending time in. It's worth noting that Victorian ladies in their country houses often spent the entire morning in bed reading and writing letters. I'm not sure I'd get away with that but if I did I would want the finest linen and lace to surround me – just like them. Besides the bed the wardrobe would undoubtedly be the largest piece of furniture in a Victorian bedroom. The most popular versions had a mirror in the center cupboard and double‐width storage on either side. Traditionally wardrobes were made of dark varnished wood – a rather large and somber feature for today's tastes. But you can often pick one up cheaply and achieve great effects by stripping and painting it. Although not always a four‐poster (even though they were popular) Victorian beds often had draperies made from light fabric with matching curtains on the windows. Matching draperies and window dressing adorn this French‐inspired room without the four‐poster bed. Note the screen in the corner – these were hugely popular in Victorian bedrooms. Traditionally used to hide unsightly items (or maybe for the lady to dress behind) the screen today serves as a wonderful way to change the contours of the room.

This gray and pink room is perfect for a sweet little baby girl. But switch out that crib and add some toy storage and it's also perfect for a growing girl. The books and knickknacks on the shelf will change but the bright colors multipurpose furniture and neutral walls and floors can grow and morph until college. A black wall makes for a very sophisticated nursery (with lot of opportunity for bright pops of color). Use chalkboard paint and this becomes the perfect graffiti wall for ages 2 to 18. Another black accent wall in a nursery. With the classic Eames rocker and the simple neutral decor this baby room could could last through college. Bright walls and fun patterns make sense for a long time. The black and white ceiling stripes stimulate an infant's brain and they still make sense for a teenager who wants to turn the room into a punk rock palace. More classic furniture combined with bright color. The Frames wallpaper by Taylor & Wood transforms the wall into an interactive constantly changing canvas.

Although I mentioned not wanting to buy expensive art to get tripped over I have no problem with it being displayed on the wall. The piece shown in this image is so gorgeous and really sets the mood for the room. Nightstand space comes at a premium. Books clocks and phones all vie for room. Bedding is expensive especially once you find the perfect duvet pillow shams throw pillows and so on. I've often thought of a neutral color scheme as being boring and safe. When I think of custom drapery my mind often envisions heavy fabric overpowering a room. Area rugs are often used to tie a space together. I love how this rug is the room's focal point. Generally speaking most nightstands are round or square. Who says you have to follow those rules?

Find a quiet corner in your home where you can draw the curtains. This daybed with great light control provided by the Roman shades is perfect for a 2 p.m. date with the sandman. Use a light blanket to cuddle up with. You will have a hard time falling asleep if you are chilly. Be careful to not overheat with heaters and blankets as this may cause you to oversleep. Surround yourself with blue. Blue is associated with tranquility and produces a calming effect. It is good for the mind‐body connection. Think of the sea and the sky and the calming effect of being outdoors. Try to find a space in your home where you feel removed from everything that is going on. Ideally you want to be away from the noise of TVs cell phones and the doorbell. This cozy nook feels just like a nest and curtains provide a visual barrier.

However as I often remind myself that's no reason to settle for sloppy sleeping quarters. Here's a step‐by‐step guide to a well‐dressed pretty and polished bed. If you've got another great tip share it in the Comments below! Break out the iron. If you're anything like me you'd rather walk through Death Valley at high noon in a parka than put your iron to its intended use. (Full disclosure: The last time I unearthed mine it had cobwebs on it.) But pressed linens are crisp linens so face your nemesis. A standard ironing board is too small to handle sheets with ease – cover an inexpensive folding table or even a large sheet of plywood with heatproof foam or batting to give you more surface area to work with. Don't forget the bed skirt and shams while you're at it. Center and straighten the bedskirt. If your bed style doesn't require a skirt you can skip this step though you may want to invest in a box‐spring cover if your box spring is exposed. Pull the mattress pad smooth. Nothing ruins bedtime comfort faster than a lumpy bottom layer and pads are notorious for bunching in the center of the bed. Tuck the fitted sheet tightly. For optimal fit use an extra‐deep sheet if you have a pillow‐top or an especially tall mattress; otherwise a standard size should work fine. Pull it taut and tuck the edges beneath the mattress. Drape the flat sheet. Now the tricky part begins. Center the flat sheet on the bed with equal overhang on either side. Align the top edge with the top edge of the mattress.
