However as I often remind myself that's no reason to settle for sloppy sleeping quarters. Here's a step‐by‐step guide to a well‐dressed pretty and polished bed. If you've got another great tip share it in the Comments below! Break out the iron. If you're anything like me you'd rather walk through Death Valley at high noon in a parka than put your iron to its intended use. (Full disclosure: The last time I unearthed mine it had cobwebs on it.) But pressed linens are crisp linens so face your nemesis. A standard ironing board is too small to handle sheets with ease – cover an inexpensive folding table or even a large sheet of plywood with heatproof foam or batting to give you more surface area to work with. Don't forget the bed skirt and shams while you're at it. Center and straighten the bedskirt. If your bed style doesn't require a skirt you can skip this step though you may want to invest in a box‐spring cover if your box spring is exposed. Pull the mattress pad smooth. Nothing ruins bedtime comfort faster than a lumpy bottom layer and pads are notorious for bunching in the center of the bed. Tuck the fitted sheet tightly. For optimal fit use an extra‐deep sheet if you have a pillow‐top or an especially tall mattress; otherwise a standard size should work fine. Pull it taut and tuck the edges beneath the mattress. Drape the flat sheet. Now the tricky part begins. Center the flat sheet on the bed with equal overhang on either side. Align the top edge with the top edge of the mattress.

This sleek headboard has a secret: It includes sliding panels that open to reveal a hidden cabinet behind. If you can't find what you're looking for and have the budget to do so consider a custom‐built headboard like this example. Different headboard designs also come extended in width with attached drawers. These drawers are handy because they corral storage while acting as built‐in bedside tables. This design features one simple drawer for the side of the bed that can make all the difference. Consider large freestanding pieces that essentially double as storage space and headboard. These are especially convenient if you're converting a space into a bedroom that doesn't contain a closet. These pieces will ground the bed while providing ample space for clothing and necessities. Here is an example of a much larger and likely custom‐built piece that acts as a headboard as well as storage. I assume there is closet space on the other side while the side we see comes complete with shelves and cabinetry. Adding upholstered squares makes the piece look like a more authentic headboard.

Tuck it under a low ceiling. A sloped ceiling helps to occupy some of the visual space that a tall headboard and piles of pillows would. Buttress it with furniture. This bed backs up to an integrated shelf and bench unit that makes the long narrow space seem snug. Orienting the bed against a wall also enhances the enveloping feel. Keep the scale large. In a tiny room even a double or queen‐size bed will feel massive and oversize scale translates to a feeling of comfort and warmth. You'll need enough room to walk on either side so don't squeeze it in too tightly. Stay low to the ground. A mattress that sits on the floor feels just right for curling up and lounging. Frame it with a four‐poster. Without canopies testers or other draped fabric treatments four‐poster beds can feel wonderfully spare. This one provides a visual framework that helps to create a cozy sense of boundaries. Warm it with color. Vivid tomato red keeps this floating bed from feeling sterile. Layer in texture. Nubby tactile linens and surfaces help to prevent a minimalist bed from feeling flat and one‐dimensional. Combine three or four textural yet comfortable elements such as the woven rug wooden planking and feathery plant in this space. Keep the color scheme basic to preserve the stripped‐down sensibility.

This navy and pink room belongs to the youngest daughter – who was 3 at the time. Keim wanted to design a space that would reflect the girl's sweet and energetic personality and fit the style of the rest of the home. Keim and the girl's mother both fell in love with the wallpaper which dictated the rest of the room's style and color palette. The client trusted Keim so she was given a lot of room to experiment. While she played around with color and pattern she carefully choose the furniture so that it would last each girl into her teens and beyond. "I would use those pieces!" she says. The family's 10‐year‐old daughter loves turquoise so Keim chose a complementary shade of peachy‐orange to help it stand out. "As with most jobs I take their favorite color and make it the accent color " says Keim. "It usually pops more that way." A custom headboard grass cloth wall covering patterned pillows and classic lamps add visual texture and depth to the vibrant space. The tree bookcase was especially exciting for the daughter and she also loves the special pencil set on her desk. The vintage chair was reupholstered in scraps from Keim's showroom for an eclectic one‐of‐a‐kind piece. The girls share a large study a playroom and closets outside of the bedrooms so Keim didn't have to integrate a lot of storage or play space into these rooms.

Carving out a soothing space like the one shown here with its white linens simple lighting and book collection will not only provide guests with comfort but the bed placement will give them a bit of privacy – even if bunking with others is required. Even the most narrow spaces can house guests. By placing a bed under the window in this hallway with a lamp table and parson's chair on the opposite wall guests will have everything they need close at hand. If you have a deep closet available in your home office why not tuck a mattress inside? Removing the closet doors and adding pretty bedding that coordinates with the room's decor will make the space feel intentional. Ever since the first Harry Potter book was published the idea of a room under the stairs has been intriguing to both children and adults. Just imagine how happy your littlest houseguests will be when they discover where they'll be sleeping. Creating a sleeping nook with curtains is a great idea if the nook is in an often‐used part of your home. If guests need more privacy they can simply close the drapes. If your home already has a daybed this spot can work for guests too. Dens are great for overnight guests. This windowed pocket door may not provide all of the necessary privacy but the drapery rod and panels are a great quick fix.

Vintage suitcases are the perfect nightstand alternative – they are readily available and full of charm. In my bedroom my husband's nightstand is four stacked suitcases we've collected over the years. You could easily place a single suitcase on top of a stool like in the image shown here and have an equally lovely vignette. Most of us have extra chairs lying around and if you don't they are an easy find on Craigslist or at thrift stores and make perfect casual nightstands. Old trunks make great nightstands because of the instant character they bring to a space and they're a nice big storage option for those of us with smaller spaces. Painted to match a room's decor a lovely drop‐leaf table becomes a spacious nightstand. An adjustable‐height vintage stool like this one is a nice alternative to the traditional nightstand. You can raise or lower the stool to work perfectly in its new function and even have a little room to store books underneath.

Campaign furniture has become such a well‐loved interior element that it's easy to forget its workhorse roots. Developed for field use during military campaigns these pieces – chests tables desks and more – are easy to break down or fold flat so they were convenient to transport as soldiers migrated along with battle lines. Although there's a strong market for antique campaign pieces modern reproductions are just as popular and perhaps none more so than the Italian campaign canopy bed. This shapely style burst into the spotlight some years ago when retail giant Anthropologie debuted its interpretation and launched an instant classic. Unlike traditional British and French campaign furnishings which tend toward heavy woods and decorative flourishes this wrought iron bed has a spare profile that belies its imposing presence in a room. Whether you pile it with fabric and pillows or take the minimalist approach to bedding it mingles well with any decor. It's hard to get this bed style wrong – there's just something about it that defies design blunders. Although draping fabric over the canopy of an Italian campaign bed softens the look its svelte gently sloping lines look especially striking when left bare. Modern and minimalist spaces call for an unadorned canopy but you could take either approach in a more traditional room. This bed showcases the draped look to artful effect and prevents the otherwise spare room from feeling hollow. Imagine this bedroom without the campaign bed. The bed acts as an elegant anchor that adds structure to the space. A white finish lightens up the bed frame making it ideal for a young girl's room.

Pendant lights aren't just for kitchens. Most rooms including bedrooms can really come to life with the right light fixture. As a designer I consider lighting to be my secret weapon. Entire aesthetics can be defined by a pendant that adds just the right amount of edge to a room. Let's focus on pendant placement and style at the bedside an important and often‐overlooked space. Consider lighting up your bedside with a pendant‐style fixture instead of a table lamp. It's a bit edgy yet it's practical because of all the floor or table space it frees up. This Japanese‐inspired pendant gives an otherwise simple room a global flavor. This is a great example of how a light can define a room's style. Futuristic glam! A perfect silver round pendant adds just the right amount of spunk to this otherwise minimalist bedroom. The designer hung this pendant on the low side which adds to its modern appeal. This long cylinder‐style fixture is a surprising choice for this bedroom. It adequately fills this very narrow space providing great light and visual impact whereas a table lamp would have felt bulky and impractical. This organic‐shaped Tom Dixon Beat Pendant fits the sparseness of this bedside. A floating nightstand adds to this modern translation of minimalism with cord‐free elegance. This bright and textured bedroom displays a beautiful modern pendant set high above the nightstand. There are several height options each creating a different look. For a similar look to this bedroom set the pendant about 48 inches from the top of the nightstand. For a lower more modern look set the pendant 24 inches above the nightstand. This setting offers an interesting study in scale. Notice the oversize headboard with the low nightstand. The silver pendant balances out the two extremes for a polished bedside look.

Decide which furniture to keep. As you are going through the room note which pieces you want to keep and which will be sold or given away. But before buying anything new consider updating existing furniture with fresh paint or knobs and look around the rest of the house (including in the attic and the basement) for forgotten treasures. Shop for new items. Look for pieces that can also be used in a first apartment (or dorm room) to get the most bang for your buck. Small side tables cushions throw blankets lamps and small‐scale armchairs will all be most welcome in those first digs away from home. Go on a "cool junk" hunt together. Make a date to hit a flea market or antiques and collectibles fair to see what you can find. Bring cash (only as much as you want to spend) measurements of key areas and a dolly or cart to carry home your finds. Wire storage lockers like the ones shown here are superversatile – use them for everything from shoes and scarves to craft supplies and books. Incorporate photos of friends. One of the downsides to taking mostly digital photos is that we tend to print photos less often. As part of this project be sure to give your teen the opportunity to have some recent pictures printed – some to frame and others to tape up in a rotating display. Japanese masking tape (also called washi tape) comes in a mind‐boggling array of colors and patterns is easily removable from most surfaces and can be used in tons of ways (like in the photo display seen here). A set would make a lovely gift for your teen when this project is complete. Try a small DIY project.
