The dream bath: Organic modern. This look is all about texture so each surface should delight the senses. Keep color to a minimum focusing on white cream and natural wood tones. A tree stump stool by the tub fits perfectly with this look; pick up a ready‐made version or try crafting one yourself. If you choose metallic accents (for drawer pulls etc.) keep them in the warm family; brass or copper would be good choices. Hang a classic hotel‐style robe on a wall hook. Choose an unusual bath mat – bamboo cork or river stone. Wool and sheepskin hold up surprisingly well in damp conditions but it's best to keep them away from direct contact with drippy toes. On the other side of the room by the sink would be a better choice. Natural linen shades filter light beautifully and add a textural note.

Mixed patterns same color. Why stop with mixing stripes when you can mix in other patterns as well? When you keep the colors to a strict palette the patterns will feel like an intentional mix. Try a wide stripe narrow stripe solid and fun printed textile like a batik or suzani in a matching hue.

White subway tile is ever popular but a style that has been gaining in popularity in recent years is to pair white subway tile with dark gray grout in a running‐brick pattern. The resulting look defines the outlines of each tile adding depth and interest to a space. The wider set the tiles are the more pronounced the outline effect becomes and the bolder the look.

This sleek headboard has a secret: It includes sliding panels that open to reveal a hidden cabinet behind. If you can't find what you're looking for and have the budget to do so consider a custom‐built headboard like this example. Different headboard designs also come extended in width with attached drawers. These drawers are handy because they corral storage while acting as built‐in bedside tables. This design features one simple drawer for the side of the bed that can make all the difference. Consider large freestanding pieces that essentially double as storage space and headboard. These are especially convenient if you're converting a space into a bedroom that doesn't contain a closet. These pieces will ground the bed while providing ample space for clothing and necessities. Here is an example of a much larger and likely custom‐built piece that acts as a headboard as well as storage. I assume there is closet space on the other side while the side we see comes complete with shelves and cabinetry. Adding upholstered squares makes the piece look like a more authentic headboard.

Skylights often come into play as do white walls and floors. Built‐ins help with space constraints as do funny little closets and bathrooms that make use of seemingly impossible angles. There is something undeniably romantic about an attic bedroom. No matter what the style it has an away‐from‐it‐all feeling. Even with a low ceiling an attic room can feel open and airy. White paint helps a lot. So do built‐in cabinets and drawers for hiding clutter. This feminine beauty uses the odd angles to their best advantage – the chandelier is hung to emphasize the height of the ceiling while the space is kept cozy with low furniture floor pillows and wallpaper that extends to every wall. White and bright. The skylight provides the sunlight but the paint color provides the expansive feeling. A white floor is an easy way to lighten a room while taking advantage of the beautiful texture of the original old wood. This saunalike wood paneling keeps the attic‐y feeling while creating a fresh space. Just add furniture. White white and more white and then one big splash of color. So simple and so elegant. You could have a lot of good dreams in this room. One accent wall of horizontal wood paneling accentuates the architecture in this weirdly shaped room but also keeps things simple and spare. Perfect symmetry. Just because you love minimalist design doesn't mean you have to go without when it comes to storage. This unit combines ample space in the lower cabinets with plenty of display space above. The natural timber contrasts nicely with the tiles wrapping around the fireplace surround. For a polished and professional‐looking finish custom‐made cabinets are often the way to go. The cabinets work so well here because they align precisely with the top of the fireplace.

Envision a deeply restorative space. The best way to begin any design project is with a clear vision of your hopes for the end result. Take a moment to ponder what your ideal bedroom space would look like and how it would feel – the scent the textures the sounds. Create as clear a picture as you possibly can and hold that in your mind as you move forward with the project. Clean the air. Air quality affects health and wellness and poor air quality can impact sleep. The easiest way to clean the air in your bedroom is simply to open your windows. Commit to letting fresh air into your bedroom for at least 10 minutes each day and the air quality is sure to improve. To take it a step further you may want to add several potted plants and an air purifier. Limit technology and remove emotional clutter. When you visualized your ideal bedroom I'd wager that it wasn't filled with clutter or the tangle of wires dangling from your laptop. Giving yourself a break from tech devices at night will help promote deeper rest and is probably a good idea healthwise as well. Also take a moment to consider the things you have stored in your bedroom. Are there boxes of bills and paperwork that make your stomach knot each time you see them? Piles of clothes that no longer fit workout tools you don't use or photos of friends you have a tense relationship with? All of these things can contribute to stress and insomnia so out they must go. Clean thoroughly and naturally. Often our bedrooms fall way down to the bottom of our cleaning to‐do list simply because not many others have to see these private spaces.
